Distinguished President of the General Assembly,
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
At the outset, let me join my previous distinguished colleagues in congratulating each and every one of you on the occasion of the celebration of International Day of Nowruz, an ancient festival marking the first day of spring and renewal of nature. The word itself invokes colorful images which are sumptuous, elegant, and opulent as well as delightfully simple, refreshing, and cordial.
The celebration of Nowroz, according to some legends, started 5500 years ago in the lands of Shumers although some scientists and poets like Al-Beruni, Firdausi and Khayom accredit it, in their writings to the times of King Jamshid (forth king of Peshdodiyan dynasty). This joyous occasion provided an opportunity for the people to cherish their rich heritage and enjoy the company of family and friends in anticipation of happiness and blessings in the year ahead, encouraged young and old, to purify their thoughts and spirit.
The uniqueness of Nowruz is that, it starts on a unique moment each time on or around the time of the March equinox (21 March or the previous/following day depending on where it is observed), that has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth in the Northern Hemisphere. Nowruz in New York this year fell at March 20, 2016 at 12:30:12 am.
Having said that, it is imperative to mention also about rich legacy that Nowruz have enshrined through all this years to the hearts and minds of people, celebrating the awakening of the nature: respect, mutual understating and forgiveness, love, justice and peace. It was this message that have connected the hearts of millions of people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds across the continents to make them gather together and celebrate it through all this centuries and what is more important keep this tradition alive.
Nowruz in Tajikistan is celebrated and observed for five days and Tajiks consider it as one of the biggest celebration of the year. During this festivity Haftseen with special traditional foods and seven symbolic items is set, Tajik women wear their national satin spring-colored dresses and friends and families get together to make Sumanak which is a special type of sweet dish made from wheat germ. Also in Nowruz various cultural activities, street festivities as well as horse racing and wrestling event are held across Tajikistan. Therefore, the Tajik people continue to celebrate this bright, revered and sacred celebration of ancestors with immense joy and love, linking their best wishes and dreams. As the President of Tajikistan, the Leader of Nation H.E. Emomali Rahmon says “The continuation of the noble traditions contributes to cultural upbringing of the young generation, promotion of basic idea of constructiveness and healthy life-style as well as to strengthening of moral standards in the society, honoring of the ancestors, creation of patriotic sentiments, national pride, intentions towards progress and prosperity of our beloved countries”.
This year's observance of Nowruz comes during a challenging time for all of us.Although 2015 was a fruitful year in terms of adoption of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development, during the International Conference on Financing for Development, the New Sustainable Development Agenda (SDGs), and historical UN Climate Change Conference, (COP 21) in Paris, however the main challenges lay ahead, implementation of those envisaged goals and plans which require from us strong dedication, solidarity and strive for common values.
In such a circumstances, Nowruz as a herald of peace, sanity, gentleness and friendship among peoples, alongside with its universality in promoting common human values, like reconciliation and neighborliness can be the main locomotive of growth, prosperity and social development for all our countries. Nowruz always guides the humanity towards well-being, love for the nature and protection of the earth. It leads us to the building of harmonious life, to strengthen peace and stability.
