Statement by H.E. Mr. S. ASLOV, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, on “Contribution of UNDP to the Implementation of National Development Plans” (24 February 2016)
Distinguished Mr. President,
Distinguished Ms. UNDP Administrator,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my great honor to join the cordial congratulations and wishes of the previous speakers extended on the occasion of the 50-th anniversary of the establishment of UNDP, the key UN agency for advancement of the agenda for development.
Today, I would like to note with great satisfaction our cooperation with UNDP, which started in 1993 with signing of the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and UNDP. In those years we were facing the challenges of a transitional period that were aggravated by the civil conflict. For this reason, at the initial stage our cooperation with UNDP and other UN agencies mainly focused on restoration of stability in the country, on rendering humanitarian assistance to internally displaced people and bringing refugees back to the country. Thanks to the overall support of the UN and its agencies, first of all the UNDP, we were able to overcome this hard period in the history of our country and embark on the road of democratic development.
On 24 February 2016 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirodjidin Aslov has participated and made a statement at the Ministerial Meeting on the occasion of 50th anniversary of UNDP which was held at the UN premises in New York.
During the meeting the high level guests from the Member States have shared their views for how UNDP, over the coming decades, can best contribute to countries’ efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
In addition, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan during his statement at the thematic break-out session «Managing Risk, Building resilience» has stressed the need to strengthen regional and international cooperation in prevention and elimination of natural disasters, especially those related to water.
Intervention by the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan H.E. Mr. Mahmadamin Mahmadaminov at the Formal Plenary debate on SG’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism [12 February 2016 at 10 am, GA Hall]
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Terrorism is a complex social and political phenomenon, multifaceted and diverse in its manifestations.
The increasing scope of international terrorism, especially in such forms as acts of terrorism, religious extremism, nationalistic (separatist) terrorism, poses a real threat to the security not only of individual countries but to the entire world community.
The recent sad events in Paris and Bamako, as well as other acts of terrorism, with tragic regularity occurring in certain countries, including seizure of the city of Kunduz in Afghanistan, terrorist attacks in Ankara and Beirut, explosions in mosques in Yemen and Pakistan, explosion of the Russian aircraft over Sinai and many other tragic events force us to unite our efforts in the face of common threat, the international terrorism.
Today, the international community, more than ever before, needs to work closely to develop constructive approaches to addressing the above issues in order to prevent such acts of barbarism in our homes.
